The City of Stirling, Scotland

When traveling through the United Kingdom, a person can do far worse than stopping off in the city of Stirling, Scotland for a bit of sightseeing. This ancient burgh of nearly 42,000 people is located in the mid-central region of the country, placed squarely between the Scottish Lowlands and the Highlands.

Over its history Stirling has been noted to be part of an area referred to as the "Gateway to the Highlands." The city is centered around a fortress and a medieval town, which lies on the banks of the River Forth. This waterway runs nearly 30 miles long, and it is at Stirling that the last fording point of the river lies. A ford is a place where a stream or river can be waded across.

Historically, Stirling was a central location and royal stronghold in the old Kingdom of Scotland. The Scottish King David I granted it burgh status in 1130, which lasted until 1975. It achieved official city status in 2002, upon the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's golden jubilee. The environs around the city have a history going back to the Stone Age, and the Romans made use of its strategic position to establish a garrison there.

The origins of the city's name haven't been completely determined, but it's thought that it's either of Scots or Gaelic derivation. In both languages, it means "place of battle." Other scholars argue that Stirling draws its name from one of the Brythonic languages, meaning "dwelling place of Melwyn."

The local government council area of Stirling, in which the city by the same name resides, has a population of around 88,000 people. Its current political form goes back to only 1994, when the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act of 1994 was enacted. The city itself is the administrative center of this council area. Both the city and the local council area are fine examples of classic Scottish life.

Fly Fishing the Arkansas River

One of the finest attributes of the Arkansas is its accessibility. Roughly 60 % has public access and most of it is well marked along major highways. Traveling south from Leadville, you will pick up the river at the Highway 24 Bridge. This marks the beginning of over five miles of the Hayden Lease. The river here is a small, winding stream with willow lined banks. From this point, it begins to pick up speed and water from tributaries as it cuts through Brown's Canyon between Buena Vista and Salida. Brown's Canyon is without a doubt one of the most scenic wilderness canyons in the state of Colorado. The best access is by boat, launching at Fisherman's Bridge and taking out at Hecla Junction. You can hike upstream from the lower end of the canyon at Hecla, however you must cross to the east side to access public land and that can be tricky except during low water. Once across, you can use the abandoned rail bed as a trail system and walk the entire canyon, stopping to fish pool after pool of productive water.

By the time the river reaches Salida, it has leveled in elevation and becomes a meandering, classic Rocky Mountain freestone river with wide gravel bars, boulder fields and deep runs accented with shallow pools and backwater eddies. For the next 50 miles, U.S. Highway 50 shadows the Arkansas, providing the most popular recreational access. From Salida to Texas Creek, fly fishers find easy access, wonderful habitat and great fish populations. From Texas Creek to Canon City, the river begins a gradual drop to the foothills. This stretch includes the Royal Gorge, which holds some nice fish, but is extremely difficult to navigate. The twenty miles from Texas Creek to the Gorge takes you through a beautiful granite canyon, complete with one of the largest Big Horn Sheep herds in the Rockies. This water offers excellent fly fishing during the spring and fall. During the summer, it is literally a water park because of the numerous Class IV and V rapids. I particularly like this section due to its close proximity to Front Range cities, and because it looks more difficult to fish, many newcomers pass it by. Actually, the fish here tend to congregate along the edges and outside seams, making shoreline hikes a nice way to spend a morning. The Arkansas in Canon City offers excellent fishing along 3.5 miles of improved river trail systems, called the Riverwalk. This water is public along the trail side (south side) and provides great walking, biking, and bird watching as well. The Riverwalk runs from the ninth street trail head to McKenzie Ave. on the east end of town.

The next fly fishing opportunity comes at Pueblo Reservoir and the tailwater below the dam. The reservoir itself can be excellent for Wipers, Crappie, and Bass. Small Mouth and Large Mouth Bass regularly fall to float tubers, but a powerboat is necessary to effectively chase Wipers. The tailwater has just undergone a habitat improvement project. The selective placement of small and large boulders has created an efficient trout habitat where nonproductive water once existed. The DOW is considering a special regulation stretch of water, so in the future this tailwater could become even a more productive fishery, especially during the winter when so many other waters are locked in the grip of winter.

Even though the Arkansas is the number one whitewater rafted river in the lower 48, the use of McKenzie style drift boats is not encouraged after the river drops below 1000 cfs. During runoff and high water these boats generally work fine, but inflatables in the 13 to 14 foot range such as self bailers from Aire, Maravia, and Down River are the best. Personal pontoon craft in the 8 to 10 foot range navigate this river extremely well. To drift this river, understand your skill level and get a good river map. Launch areas are well placed from Granite to Canon City, giving you the option of short or long floats. Even if you use a boat, probably the best way to fish this river is to get out and walk/wade the boulder fields, rock gardens and long shorelines. Fish hold along shorelines primarily and a competent fly fisher can break the river down into smaller systems and work fish up close and personal. Wading can be dangerous in many places, so use studded boots and a wading staff. It makes sense to be prepared, since the Arkansas is one of those rivers that tempt us to wade "just a little further."

Ninety-five percent of the time, I fish this river with a 9 ft. 5 wt. rod. Afternoons can be breezy, so wind penetration is a must. If you have an 8 ft. 4 wt., it should be perfect for fishing dry flies. One of this river's assets is that it provides something for everyone; dry fly fishing, nymphing and streamer fishing can be effective most of the time. The Arkansas is not an early morning river. I find it fishes better from 9:00 AM till 2 PM, and 5:00 PM till just after dark. Large Browns didn't get big by exposing themselves to the numerous predators along the drainage. A lantern and a short sink tip line can be a good combination for those who enjoy night fishing. I find it invigorating and extremely productive, but it does require knowledge of the streambed for wading safety purposes. Besides, all you need is a #8 Black Woolly Bugger - well, maybe two.

Royal Caribbean Cruise

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is one of the biggest and best known cruise ship companies in the world. It now operates some of the biggest cruise ships sailing the world's oceans.

An American-Norwegian company, the company runs out of Miami, Florida, although ships are normally classed as Liberian. The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line was originally founded in 1968 by the amalgamation of three Norwegian shipping companies, Anders Wilhelmsen & Company, Gotaas Larsen and I.M. Skaugen & Company. Initially catering for Arctic cruises the first couple of ships were the Nordic Prince and Song of Norway. It wasn't until 1982 that the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line finally made it onto the world's cruise radar, with the building of the Song of America, which was the third largest cruise liner afloat.

Since 1982 the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has continued to sail some of the biggest cruise ships afloat. All of their ships consist of "of the seas" as a suffix. There are currently 20 ships sailing under the brand, and are split into six types; Genesis Class, Freedom Class, Voyager Class, Radiance Class, Vision Class and Sovereign Class. A further three ships are under construction and are all being built to ensure that it will continue to operate the biggest ships. The Freedom of the Seas was the largest passenger ship in the world and further Genesis Class ships are planned to keep this style up.

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line though is not just about their large ships, and the company own a couple of coastal retreats, Labadee in Haiti, and Coco Cay in the Bahamas. Both resorts are often used in conjunction with their cruises, and the sandy beaches do make a nice comparison to a cruise. It also controls a number of brands, including Royal Caribbean International, Azamara Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Island Cruises and Pullmantur Cruises. This makes it one of the biggest companies as well as operating the biggest ships.

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is one of the most respected of the world's cruise line companies. Operating the largest ships, and travelling to destinations around the world, sees thousands of passengers board their ships each and every month. Passengers may be first time cruisers but there are also plenty of passengers who are repeat travellers with the company.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Floating Giants

Royal Caribbean Cruise has a history of being the cruise company that provides among the largest cruise boats in the world since the 1980s. In 2006 the company confirmed their position as number one when they introduced the Freedom Family class of ships with the Freedom of the Seas and the Liberty of the Seas. With the upcoming launch of the ship Genesis of the Seas a smaller town can go on the cruise together. This ship will have space for about 5,400 passengers!

That Royal is a giant is clear not only from the size of their vessels but also by what they have to offer. The company owns coastal property in Haiti since 1986 and through this they offer their guests completely private destinations to stop by during the cruise. This is coupled with more privately owned property in Bahamas, namely one of the Berry Islands which by the company was named Coco Cay.

To go on a cruise with them could be a dreamlike experience. The huge ships host activities that are both exciting and impressive. One example is an ice-skating rink which could be an adventure for both the young and the older generation. This rink also enables spectacular shows which get an even more amazing shimmer to them as they are being performed in the middle of the sea.

The huge ships offers not only amazing entertainment in the form of sport activities like golf and skating but also great cuisine and Spa facilities. Whatever it is the keyword for this company is; giant. During the coming year people can set sail with from the UK, Spain and Italy. With 6 ships docking in Europe in 2008 they should easily maintain their position as the largest presence in Europe of any other cruise company in the world. One thing is certain: Taking a Royal Caribbean cruise is definitely an experience.

Is a Russia River Cruise Worth the Money?

When one thinks about a European River cruise, regions like the South of France and Germany immediately leap to mind. Rivers like the Seine, Danube, Saone and the Rhine are immensely popular among European travelers. However, one region that has been gaining in popularity lately is Russia, and Volga River cruises have been very much in demand over the past few years.

Russia is a country of great culture, history, tradition and art, and travelers to the region will find no shortage of things to see and do. However, accommodation in Russia does not come cheap. Hotels can be exorbitantly expensive, and finding deals on food and car rentals can be very difficult. It is these high prices that have made Russian river cruises such a popular option for visitors to the country.

A cruise precludes the need to book hotels. Your hotel room is right there with you there whole time. Car rentals are unnecessary as your mode of transportation is also included. Food is also included on your voyage, so again you don't have to worry about breaking the budget at expensive restaurants.

So, we've established that a riverboat tour is definitely an economical way to see Russia, but what will you see on your voyage? Not only will you get a unique view of the beautiful Russian countryside as you sip on a beverage and watch the scenery go lazily by, but you will also get the opportunity to visit some of Russia's most important historical sites in great cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. You can explore the wondrous Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood in Uglich, and the magnificent Suyumbike Tower in Kazan is not to be missed.

These are but a few of the highlights you will enjoy, all the while relaxing in luxury aboard your floating hotel. Rest assured that a Russian river cruise is well worth the money you will spend, and you will have a vacation adventure that you will remember throughout your days.

Family Vacations on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas

Royal Caribbean has a long history of creating family-friendly cruise ships that are innovative and fun. When Freedom of the Seas was introduced in 2006, she was the world's largest, carrying 4,375 passengers. And she introduced many cool amenities and activities that have been widely imitated.

Freedom of the Seas is still a great choice for families and she provides positive, quality experiences for kids of all ages, and their parents.

She sails from Port Canaveral on Sundays, and visits CocoCay - Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas - St. Thomas, and St. Maarten.

Freedom of the Seas activities.

Kids who enjoy going to the mall will feel right at home in the four-story Royal Promenade. There are plenty of places to shop and eat during the day, and nightly parades and street performers are fun and festive.

The Adventure Ocean program provides supervised activities for kids in four different age groups. Children who aren't yet potty trained can come with their parents for play dates, and private babysitting is available.

The H2O Zone is extremely popular with older kids. This onboard water park has a waterfall and separate pool, away from the adults. And a private club for teenagers keeps them occupied during the evening hours.

The array of activities on Freedom of the Seas is staggering. Whether you want to scale a rock wall, play nine holes of mini golf, ice skate, box, or surf, you'll be able to do lots of fun things you've never done before. There are three Jacuzzis, two cantilevered whirlpools that jut out from the side of the ship, two swimming pools, a day spa, and a fitness center.

Freedom of the Seas restaurants.

When it's time to eat, kids' favorites like Johnny Rockets and Ben & Jerry's charge a modest surcharge, but the pool-side grill has free burgers and hot dogs, and there's also a café for pizza and paninis.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available in the dining room and Windjammer Café. And My Time Dining lets families choose dinner times that are convenient for them.

Parents will enjoy a night out at one of the two alternative restaurants - Portofino Trattoria and Chops Grille. The first serves salads, pastas, and other Italian specialties. The latter has steak house favorites and yummy desserts.

Freedom of the Sea cabins.

Freedom of the Seas has several types of accommodations that work well for families. All the staterooms have WiFi Internet access, mini fridges, small safes for valuables, and flat-screen TVs where you can watch movies or get more information about shipboard activities.

Those on a budget should consider one of the 172 inside cabins that overlook the Promenade. These are a good value and are a little more inviting than the usual inside cabin.

At 300 square feet, the Family Cabins can sleep up to six. Large parties - up to eight people - can upgrade to a Family Royal Suite. With a living room, two bathrooms, two bedroom, and a big balcony, these are roomy and luxurious.

With tons of fun activities, plenty of dining options, top-quality kids programs, and fun, low-key port calls, Freedom of the Seas offers everything families need for a winning vacation.

(1/5) Dangerous Missions The Cockleshell Heroes

The Cockleshell Heroes raided Nazi-occupied Bordeaux in 1942. The Cockleshell Heroes target was the harbor in Bordeaux. They succeeded in sinking one ship and severely damaging four others and doing enough damage to greatly disrupt the use of the harbor for months to come. Such was the significance of the raid, that Winston Churchill said that it helped to shorten to World War Two by six months. For a number of months during the war, merchant ships had used Bordeaux to supply the German military that was stationed in that part of France. German U-boats used the area as a base. Any supply ships that came through the English Channel could be dealt with but plenty of merchant ships were willing to sail to Bordeaux harbor via the Mediterranean and there was little the British Navy could do about it. A raid by bombers would have led to many civilian casualties so this was excluded. The task of the Cockleshell Heroes was simple destroy as many ships in the harbor as was possible so that the harbor itself would be blocked with wreckage, thus rendering it incapable of fully operating as a harbor. This was to be called Operation Frankton. The Cockleshell Heroes were Royal Marine Commandos. These men got their nickname as the canoes they were to use were nicknamed cockles. After months of training, they were ready to set-off for their target except that none of them knew what their target was. This was only made known to them once the submarine HMS Tuna had surfaced off of the ...

Planning For Amazon River Cruises

If you are planning on going on any of the Amazon river cruises, you want to plan ahead and be ready. There are a few things to plan which include choosing the right stateroom, packing properly, and bringing enough money. Amazon river cruises are a fantastic way to take a few days off for vacation and proper planning will ensure you have a wonderful time.

Choosing the stateroom you are going to stay in on the cruise ship is a big deal. Many people think they will be fine by choosing the smallest room possible because they will never be in their room. If you are someone who likes to have time to yourself and you want to be somewhere comfortable then you might want to be careful about choosing the cheapest room. The princess line has rooms that provide comfort and space so you can be comfortable. You can enjoy fresh air with a balcony if you choose. People who have issues with sleepwalking or small children shouldn't choose a balcony room. A larger more comfortable room makes it feel as if you are on your own private amazon river cruise. There will be moments when you want to get away from all of the tourists and have some private time to yourself.

Another factor when planning for Amazon river cruises is packing. Always pack light if you are traveling in the summer months through September. Bring light warm clothing for the evenings because it may get chilly. However, your trip will be warm and you won't need to pack any heavy clothing. Be sure if you bring electrical appliances like a hair dryer, the devices are up to code with the right electrical plugs. Many of the princess line cruises will offer hair dryers for you. Don't plug anything into an outlet that does not look the same as the one you are used to using. Also, it is always a good idea to ask about the electrical compliance before you pack your back. There are adapters you can purchase if you need to.

The next factor for planning for a private Amazon river cruise is money. A wonderful thing about taking a cruise is that you are saving money and buying an all inclusive package. This means you don't have to worry about food, accommodations, and even excursions. However, if you choose to drink alcoholic beverages on the ship you will have to pay additional money before you check out the final day. Many people are surprised with a large bill on their last cruise day because they assumed everything was free. Always get a list of the things you are charged for so there are no surprises at the end of your vacation. In addition, you will want to do some shopping at some of the amazing cities along the Amazon. Bring plenty of cash in the right currency. This may mean you need to exchange money at the airport when you arrive.

When planning your trip it is a good idea to read the reviews on the different rooms and choose one that will provide enough comfort for you throughout the duration of the trip. Bring plenty of money and pack appropriately.

Stefanos in Myanmar (No 1) My cruise in Bagan

Bagan, the ancient royal capital of Myanmar, is one of Buddhism's three greatest monuments, along with Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Borobadur in Indonesia. Ancient Egyptian Art Colors, Symbolism, & Ethnicity - Zahi Hawass Explains.avi

Famed Egyptologist and head of Egyptian antiquities, Zahi Hawass explains the multiple colored statues and hieroglyphs from certain periods in ancient Egyptian history. Gold, jet black, Caucasian, middle brown, etc... are the colors that many times confuse people as to the true ethnicity that the figures portrayed really posessed. These colors many times represented CONCEPTS and NOT individual races always. Gold for the sun, jet black for dark night and moon, etc.... Solar and land fertility ideologies such as the sun, moon, stars, Nile River, and soil fertility were a huge part of Egyptian religion, therefore these concepts were sometimes portrayed as being a part of the actual individual royal figures that the statues many times represented. (after all, pharaohs were considered to be living "gods." ) Nubians did conquer Egypt at one point late in history, as well as Africans being in Egypt long before, BUT the majority of Egyptians were and still are a middle brown color, with many clear LIGHT SKINNED Caucasians mixed in as well. Egypt was MOST CERTAINLY a civilization in which most of the people were light skinned and middle brown, therefore CAUCASIAN in DNA. Such as the recent R1b western European DNA tests for Tutankhamen, along with the red, blond, and other European hair colors that are found in many royal Egyptian mummies, these are all 100 % factual evidences for anyone to see. Famed Egyptologist and author Eugen Strouhal proved as far back as 1971 that TWICE as ...

Hello From Nova Scotia - Learning About Native Heritage at the Bear River First Nation Heritage

About an hour after my departure from Annapolis Royal after a beautiful drive along the shoreline of the Annapolis Basin and through the early fall colours of the Bear River Valley, (also known as "Little Switzerland". I arrived at the Bear River First Nation Heritage and Cultural Centre. I was greeted by Wanda Joudry-Finigan and Robert (Robbie) McEwan, while Frederick Harlow was manning the cash register. All are members of the Bear River First Nation, and Wanda and Robbie proceeded to celebrate my arrival with a special welcome song.

Wanda explained that the song invites our mutual relatives, grandfathers and ancestors to join us at this occasion. The lobby of the Centre holds various artifacts and a Heritage Gallery that pays homage to current and former Chiefs and Elders of the Bear River First Nation. Wanda pointed out present Chief Frank Meuse Junior who also operates a lodge for adults and youth alike who wish to learn about the Mi'kmaq culture. Another image was of Agnes Potter, a celebrated leader and respected Elder of the Bear River First Nation.

Then I was invited to view a brief movie about Willie Meuse, Frank's grandfather, shown in footage from the 1930s on the Bear River. The film also highlighted the construction and launching of the first birch bark canoe built since 1927. The launching took place in 2004 and speaks to the importance of the ancestors.

We left the vestibule and entered a large multi-purpose room housing a variety of interpretive displays about the life and history of the Mi'kmaq First Nation. This room is also used for theatre productions, games of sports for the youth, community card parties, holiday feasts and presentations. Frederick joined me and gave me an overview of the birch bark canoe. He explained that the canoe weighs about 90 to 95 pounds and was constructed using authentic historical canoe-building methods used in the area. The canoe is a sea-going canoe, evidenced by the high rise in the middle. Fresh-water canoes do not feature a rise in the middle of the canoe.

The vessel is constructed of various types of wood including ash and birch and the outside is covered with birch bark. Any potential openings in the canoe's skin are patched up with a mixture of spruce gum and bear grease. Canoes used to be the main form of transportation for the First Nations People and their navigation skills, fishing and hunting knowledge helped the French settlers when they first came to this area in the 1600s. This life-size canoe was made by Todd Labrador and Cory Ryan who is a seventh generation descendent of Malti Pictou, a well-known Bear River Mi'kmaq guide. Before Cory, he was the last person to make a birch bark canoe in the area.

The next exhibit featured a variety of arts and crafts that are produced here using Mi'kmaq artistic traditions. Robbie came over to give me more insight into some of the local arts and crafts. He explained that leather is worked to produce mittens, jackets, dresses, moccasins and other items. Dreamcatchers are an important symbol to the Mi'kmaq. With their intricate web-like design they are hung to catch dreams floating through the night air. There is a saying that dreamcatchers let the good dreams through but protect you from the bad dreams.

Jewellery is made using a variety of glass beads, bone beads as well as imitation sinew. In the past moose tendons were used to produce the pendants and bracelets. Decorated deer and moose hide are available for purchase as well. Robert indicated that he recently made an ornate dress for a native chief in Newfoundland. His artistic skills are evidenced by some of the most impressive pieces of work: Robert showed me a decorative jewellery box that he is currently working on. The box is made of birch bark and porcupine quills, bordered with sweet grass whose scent I was able to smell. He explained that porcupine quills are easily removed from the animal, and they are essentially used to stitch an elaborate design. For each quill a hole is poked and the quill is pulled through. By the time this item is finished, Robert will have invested over 200 hours to produce the elaborate pattern on this decorative box.

Wanda joined us and took me to a display of a wigwam to explain certain rituals and conventions that would be adhered to in First Nations encampments. Visitors would be invited to sit in the most honourable space in the home or wigwam. The same would go for children so they would be able to see everything to the left and to the right of them in order to be able to learn. During winter mats made from rush would be used for insulation against the cold. Baskets were hand- made in order to harvest scallop, clams, or mussels. Each of these particular baskets could hold up to 10 pounds of seafood. Other baskets made from ash were used for potato and apple picking. These baskets were hand-made in large quantities in the 1900s as a major means of economic survival in changing times. Today these baskets are sold as decorative items.

The tipi also features a variety of furs, including lynx, rabbit, mink, red fox and silver fox. During the 1920s and 1930s silver foxes were a real fashion craze in England and many women had a fox fur, complete with head and legs, draped around their necks as a statement of elegance. The fox' head would be equipped with a clasp so it could be clipped onto the lapel of the lady's coat.

I learned that the wigwam is made of birch bark. Wigwams were lightweight, which made them easy to move from one location to another and water-resistant. Encampments would be set up near the mouth of rivers, which would provide a plentiful opportunity for food and means of travel. A large part of native diet consisted of fish; the rest was made up of berries, fruits and meats. Often fishing weirs were used for catching eels. Wanda explained that in the last few years about 800 encampments have been found in Nova Scotia with more than 4000 artifacts dating back 2,500 to 4,000 years.

Mi'kmaq hunting traditions included bear traps that were baited with fish. Once the animal was caught, women would remove the guts, the hide and the sinews and carry it back to the camp to prepare it. Excess meat and fat would be scraped off the skin with scraping tools, stones or shells. Wanda informs me that women were very highly respected in First Nations society, as they were life givers. Meals were cooked in a hollowed-out log that held red-hot stones that had been heated over a fire. Water would be poured over the food and the hot stones to cook the meal. Spices were gathered in the forest, and instead of potatoes a plant called the Jerusalem artichoke would be served with the meat. Fish and meat were dried or smoked, and eggs were gathered from marsh birds.

We moved over to a display on Mi'kmaq language and Wanda mentioned that there were 7 Mi'kmaq districts, each with their own chief. The Bear River Reservation is located in a place called "Kespukwik", meaning "where the water stops flowing", referring to the Bear River flowing into the Annapolis Basin. Mi'kmaq language is based on action verbs, and pronouns are important indicators of belonging and possession. For instance, the words "mother" or "sister" can never be said by themselves, they always require a pronoun to indicate whose mother we are talking about. The Mi'kmaq words would say "your mother", "my mother", or" his/her mother" etc.

At the next display we saw a 1936 picture of Wanda's great-grandmother, Sarah Fossey who lived until 1961 to the ripe old age of 101. Wanda has fond memories of Sarah who used to bring her grandchildren and great-grandchildren oranges as a special treat. Sarah was captured in a movie from the 1930s that was displayed at the Bear River First Nation Heritage and Cultural Centre. Wanda was overwhelmed when she first saw moving images of her great-grandmother in the movie.

We also discussed life as a Mi'kmaq today. Wanda explained that Mi'kmaq society was matriarchal until the arrival of the first Europeans. In recent years, from the 1920s to the 1990, the government instituted a policy of residential schools where young native children were taken away from their families and taught the "white man's ways'. This led to a significant loss in culture and heritage, women's status eroded as a result and Mi'kmaq family structure suffered. The government wanted to force native children to "integrate" into mainstream society and in the process an ancient way of life was destroyed. Siblings were often not allowed to talk to one another and families were torn apart. Many of the native children suffered from mental, physical and sexual abuse in the residential schools. As a result of these policies, today many elders are learning the Mi'kmaq language from the younger generation.

Today there is a counter-trend where young First Nations people are rediscovering their language, culture and heritage. Of the conditions at the Bear River Reservation Wanda says that it is a managed forest and there is no poverty on the reserve, which holds about 100 people. Wanda herself has lived off the reserve for her entire life and has been self-efficient.

Wanda also explained that having "native status" is an important issue in First Nations communities. Native status confers certain benefits in terms of health care, taxation and schooling. Bill C31, introduced in 1985, improved native women's status in the sense that they could pass native status on to their first generation children, even if the children were from a mixed native/non-native marriage. Men on the other hand can pass on native status indefinitely through the generations, even if they marry a non-native wife. This often creates economic inequality and friction within the same family where one set of cousins could have native status whereas another cousin would not officially be considered native. Even fairly recent legislation prolongs the European tradition of favouring male bloodlines.

Wanda gave me the names of several books that would provide further education about First Nations life and communities and when I said goodbye, she generously gave me two books to read as a present: "L'sitkuk - The Story of the Bear River Mi'kmaw Community" by Darlene Ricker, and "We Were Not Savages - A Mi'kmaq Perspective on the Collision between European and Native American Civilizations" by Daniel N. Paul, excellent reading material to educate myself further about native culture and history. As a parting gift she gave me a handcrafted medicine pouch that she had made herself, an example of the Mi'kmaq tradition of generosity and peacefulness.

I thanked Wanda and the entire team at the Bear River First Nation Heritage and Cultural Centre for their most interesting introduction to Mi'kmaq heritage and culture and resolved to read these books soon to educate myself. I started driving down the hill and all the people congregated at the local Bear River Band Office waved goodbye to me. It was time for me to continue my drive along the Evangeline Trail to tonight's final destination: Yarmouth.

Mountie afterlife raises questions

It took some time before backup RCMP officers in a Northwest Territories town located a colleague who had been fatally shot while responding to a dispatch call, the RCMP acknowledged Tuesday. Const. Christopher Worden was killed Saturday morning in Hay River, a small town about 400 kilometres south of Yellowknife. The suspect, Emrah Bulatci, 23, of Alberta, is considered armed and dangerous and remains at large. Police received the call from an apartment building at 4:58 am MT, and Worden, who was on call, was dispatched, police said. When police lost radio contact with him, two backup officers were sent and they found him in a wooded area suffering from gunshot wounds. "I can say that it did take time for the members to locate him when they arrived at the scene," RCMP Sgt. Larry O'Brien told CBC News on Tuesday in an interview from Hay River. The acknowledgement of a delay in finding Worden at the scene comes amid reports of residents in the community saying police did not arrive on the scene until almost an hour after gunshots were heard. "Some people were wondering whether he could have been saved had he been located more quickly," the CBC's Joslyn Oosenbrug reported Tuesday from Hay River. Bulatci, also known as Justin Elise, was last seen in Edmonton and just north of the Alberta capital, in St. Albert, police said Monday. He has blond hair, blue eyes, weighs about 135 pounds and is five feet tall. Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous and is ...

The Scoop on the New Royal Caribbean - Oasis of the Seas

Hello everyone, I wanted to give you my feedback with the large sums of money in the cruise industry these days .... The new Royal Caribbean, Oasis of the Seas! It is home port in Fort Lauderdale all year long. My husband and I had the pleasure of two nights on board during a pre-inaugural tour office / media spend training cruise. I must say I had my doubts like a great ship .... the largest at sea, 225,000 GRT (gross registered tons), up from the Freedom-class shipsof 160,000 tons. This ship carries about 6,500 passengers plus staff.

I thought before I crossed ..... too large, too many people, a monstrosity I would not want to cross really. I thought .... why should all of a ship that great need.

Well let me tell you ...... I was wrong! This is an innovative ship, it has more to do to see more, experience more and more to enjoy, then I could in a week. And better yet, it is easy to maneuver (in contrast to many ships, where up and down and mustto get around, where you go).

It has an ice skating rink, basketball court, mini golf, two Flow Rider surf simulator, a zip line, a mini golf course, two climbing walls, five pools, a spa, fitness center, large indoor theater, comedy club, a jazz club, piano bar, a pub, a Spanish club, the Royal Promenade with big parades, and a water theater, casino, full-size carousel, shopping, shopping and shopping (candy store, at sea, saving pets (think Build- A-Bear)Children boutiques, teen boutiques, COACH, Prince and Greene, Willow, etc), two arcades, table tennis, a fabulous children's pool area, large children's and youth clubs and much more.

This does not even two dozen restaurants. Yes, they charge a premium lot but what a fabulous selection of the Royal Promenade has cupcake shop on the Johnny Rockets and the Seafood Hut on the Boardwalk, Japanese and Sushi Restaurant Izumi, the very upscale 150 CentralPark, which I hear is absolutely the best with an impressive young chef prepares an indescribable multi-course menu. And I've never seen a buffet dining area as beautiful as seen on this ship. The Windjammer Marketplace, as they call it, has windows that face directly out over the promenade, the zip line, basketball and mini golf. We sat at the end of the zip line and enjoyed watching the faces of those zooming through the Open-Air-zip line 10 decks above the Boardwalk while we ateLunch.

This ship is a destination ....

If I was lucky, I'm back, I plan to take my children (15 and 12), although I am sure I will never am. Did I mention the great teen club? It is far from the rest of the Kid's Club and convenient to the sports deck, the Wipe Out Café (Think pizza, hot dogs and soft ice cream) and a large arcade. It has (as do teen's like) giant bean bags to lounge in, it has a music studio, a gaming area, which looked like a yogaArea and even outside meeting place shaded area.

My thoughts on what I will, if I to 7 nights .... spend a day to be able to enjoy in any environment. I loved the Boardwalk with the Aqua Theatre, where it shows high divers, synchronized swimmers, and more have. The floor in the pool matches of a dry period to 18 m deep. How cool is that? I want to spend more time in Central Park. I did not even get a chance to take a ride and a drink on the Rising Tide Barthat floats up and down, between Central Park and the Royal Promenade. It looks like a giant surfboard new era! And oh, do not forget the adults only Solarium with private pool, two whirlpools astonishing that are exposed on the side of the ship, their own "healthy choice" breakfast area, lazy lounge and a bar

And let me mention the accommodations on this ship .... You far more to choose from then any before. Of course, the standard inside, ocean view, balcony andSuites, but more. How about a balcony, the park faces the Boardwalk or Central, or perhaps an inside look at the Royal Promenade. Perhaps you prefer a suite ..... how about the new 2-level loft suites .... they are amazing, especially the Royal Loft Suite! I fell in love with the Aqua Theater Suite, which sleeps up to 8 guests. It has a large balcony overlooking the ocean, the other on one side and the aqua theater and rock climbing walls. And there are a handful of 6Person inside and ocean view cabins for those of you with large families with young children. I think I've heard that there were seven on board, so be sure to book in advance it. They will go fast!

My advice when you cruise .... You book your evening's entertainment in advance, before entering the ship. You can check schedules and options, if you have booked. You can do this interactive from your TV in your cabin, but why wait .... be sure what you want. I particularlyrecommended for the comedy club, as it only seats about 110 people per show. I also recommend that you not wait to book your cruise. This ship is very popular because there is so much enthusiasm and pricing was up. If you book early to buy Best Cruise, you get the best selection of cabins, but you get the best prices because we just keep these records for you on a bi-weekly. When prices fall, we get you the lower rates! No work required on your part to keep aEye out. We are after your best interest, because we believe the agency your are about your friends and family and the agency you come back, again and again want to be. Do not forget we also offer the best prices available on Royal Caribbean has to offer, and then all off by giving you enjoy on board ship credit on the.

Enjoy our pictures by writing to us. We are happy to send the pictures. You can also find our pictures on our Facebook page. To link to go to it on the About Us pageon our website. Let me know if you have any questions, I would be glad to talk about this ship with you at any time. Yes, pricing kind of high in 2010, but that's like no other ship on the high seas! It is on my list has to do now!

South Africa - The Tugela River Walk

Hikers find that the Royal National Park in the Drakensberg Africa has some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa. Mountain slopes rise above densely forested valleys, so give the vehicles grassland. Looming over everything is the majestic amphitheater, one of the most impressive geographical features of the Drakensberg. The Tugela River Trail follows the course of the upper part of the river, and is one of the best hikes in the parks. It includes 14 km (8.7Miles) and take takes an average of six hours.

View the Devil's Tooth

The trail begins at the Thendele Camp. It takes you to the southwest of the amphitheater and its waterfalls. You follow the river, and when the season was dry, you can actually walk to the river canyon and drawing is directly on the path of the. Much of the route is through grassland, but spots Yellowwood forest to give some relief from the sun. Along the way you viewthe most impressive summit Drakensberg, Mont-aux-Sources, the Sentinel, the eastern stronghold, and the legendary Devil's Bridge tooth. The Devil's Tooth was first grown in 1950 and is still one of the most difficult challenges for mountain climbers in South Africa.

The spectacular Tugela River

In its upper reaches, the Tugela is one of the most spectacular rivers in South Africa. It roars through the amphitheater rim in less than two km (1.2 miles) of cascades, of whichDrops of a pure 614 meters (2,014 feet). If you enter the gorge, cross, a number of stones, it is a good idea to take shoes with a firm grip, because the rocks can be slippery. This will also save you depend on your walking shoes wet. The hike through the gorge is fantastic because it is so beautiful in space and presented floral backdrop. It takes you to the base of the amphitheater that is part of the Mont-aux-Sources (mountain Springs), so named because of the many rivers are named, including the Tugela, which result from it. Take the narrow part of the gorge called Tugela tunnel.

You'll Get Wet

You will be fascinated by the carved sandstone walls of the tunnel Tugela, are in fantastic shape different than anything seen in South Africa. But they happen, you must be prepared to get wet, especially when the river is up because of recent rain. The alternative is a ladder that you use on a pathalong the rock wall. Steel pegs are there to help you to get the end of the tunnel.

The policeman helmet

Since the end of the tunnel Tugela you have the best view of the waterfall. You can have a picnic here and swim in the shallows. In winter freezes the highest waterfall in a sheet of jagged ice - an unusual sight for South Africa. You must follow your steps back for the return trip with a helmet of a policeman, a large rock formation, asGuiding landmark.

Birds and baboons

For this is South Africa, you will probably see wildlife on your walk. More than 230 bird species have been seen at the Royal National Park. It is also home to baboons and gray rhebok. The best months to go from October to March. Note that is very much in the summer sun.

From the album "Bloody Blasphemy" (1999). Lyrics: Firebreathing unseigable through your fortress. I am the devil and Michael De Ruyter is my name. I ride on the waves, right through your chains. You are my prey and you'll never forget my name. A Fire Breath, a red sky in a lake of fire will die. The English pride, consumed by flames, you will never forget my name. Dos and Don'ts in Thailand

Every country has its list of cultural do's and don'ts, and Thailand is no different. The following a shutdown of the main things is to be aware. Thais in general are a very understanding person and do not expect foreigners to be aware of all the nuances of Thai culture. But show a basic understanding and respect, always good!

Don'ts

Not the voice better - Thais usually try to remain calm (or bottle things) and increase those voice as the face is seen to lose.If you they do not make you more of an argument or any friends to win.

Do not touch, climb or otherwise build a Buddha image or a picture of the king (or in fact a member of the royal family). Buddhism is the main religion in Thailand and Buddha figures are treated with great respect and care. Any disrespect shown family, each member of the royal would probably land you in deep trouble and with a prison sentence (though this usually commuted bythe king, but result in your immediate deportation, and revocation of a visit to Thailand again).

Do not touch a Thai person on the head. The head is thought of as the highest part of the body, and it seems as offensive touching a Thai person's head. The feet are the lowest point and seen as dirty. Thus the two spaces are not the things with his feet, put your feet on a table or to show things, with the feet (especially not a Buddha image).

Take off your shoes! In response to the abovePoint, if you ever visit a Thai family at home, it is customary, the shoes either outside the house or just inside, according to remove, if this family save their shoes! Also, most of the temple buildings have a no shoes sign outside.

Allow to pay the Thai person if they are offering. This is tricky, because in most cultures, often the host offer for a meal and this results in great debate over who should pay what for pay! This is particularly true in Thailand, where normallythe most senior person present pay. If you try to pay rather than how can you challenging their seniority be interpreted. Instead, you can return the compliment by buying them a gift.

Do's

You try and speak Thai. Any attempt to speak of an alien Thai is welcomed with joy and encouragement. In general, you can make yourself understood in everyday situations such as ordering food and buying tickets, etc.

Wai, but use it sparingly. The "Wai" is a Thai greeting, done byPress the palms of hands together, prayer-like. By all means Wai back if you offered to you, but you should not necessarily offer a wai meet every Thai person you are. Apart from this increasingly boring after a while, it is not necessary. It is something woven into the Thai culture and under all possible rules and subtleties to do with your age, seniority and position in society and family structure. For example, a Thai office worker greet their boss or ansenior member of the family of her partner with a wai, but they would not do the same to a low waiter. Foreigners are not expected to understand all this, but a basic awareness is always welcome.

They show great respect for the monks and offer your seat on a boat or by bus to a monk. As a general rule, women should avoid all physical and eye contact with a monk. Each is expected to show in terms of monks. It is always welcome, if you give up your seat for a monk and the riverSpeedboats in Bangkok even have special Monk only areas. As in many places, so that your seat for an older person is also appreciated.

Keep your wits about you. When on vacation, people are naturally more relaxed and have a tendency to let down their guard. As such, the tourists an easy prey for the many fraudsters from Bangkok, do not let this be you! If you were at home, and someone tells you that a well-known attraction royal ceremony was closed for one, would youbelieve them? If someone said to sell it was a government one day only jewel, would you believe them? Exactly! Do not fall for this trick in Thailand, see my own article "The Bangkok Tuk-Tuk trick" about this.

Try to eat the road. Many people are afraid to try the infamous Thai Street Food, Bangkok is famous for its excellent street food. This probably comes from our adjusted, health and safety conscious way of life in the West. However, Thai Street Food is withthe best, according to the general rule of looking busy stalls and booths go with a large Thai clientele.

You try to dress respectfully. While no one could care less if you're around in shorts and T-shirts, remember that modern Thailand is a relatively conservative place. Thai people (especially the older generation) tend to be good clothing for all occasions, at least, and polo-shirt and jeans.
